New NASAMS weaponry is being delivered to the Air Defence Battalion over the past few days since the end of last week. The unit has been receiving launchers, fire distribution centers, radars, and other equipment, necessary for forming a new medium-range air defence battery in a step significantly boosting the existing capabilities of this type of air defence.
NASAMS is a medium-range air defence system manufactured in Norway. Its affective range against aircraft, uncrewed aerial systems and cruise missiles reaches several tens of kilometers. Introduced in the Lithuanian Armed Forces in 2020, is one of the most common medium-range air defence systems among NATO Allies. It is integrated with the short-range air defence equipment and air surveillance radars in the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
The acquisition contract on additional NASAMS equipment was signed in 2023. The new deliveries are expected to be fully tuned in with the Lithuanian Armed Forces by the end of this year. The NASAMS Battery will improve airspace surveillance and defence, shorten the response time and expand the size of protected area. The central task of the new air defence units will be to provide medium-range air support to the 1st Lithuanian Armed Forces Division.
