December 1, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Valdemaras Rupšys met with his Czech counterpart General Aleš Opata at Rukla (Jonava region), largest Lithuanian Armed Forces garrison. The Chiefs of Defence discussed military cooperation between Lithuania and the Czech Republic, activities, exercises and further plans of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group.

“I have thanked today the Czech Chief of Defence for his persistent support to the efforts to strengthen the security and defence of the Baltic region, which includes our national security and defence. At this moment, the largest Czech contingent is serving with the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group, that is a message that we are ensuring readiness for collective defence side by side with the other NATO allies. We have also discussed the security situation at the meeting and I asked to deliver my thanks to the Czech Members of Parliament for the assistance in managing the irregular migration crisis,” said Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Valdemaras Rupšys.

The bilateral meeting took place as part of the visit of the Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces and his delegation to Lithuania. General Aleš Opata is here to meet with his troops deployed with the NATO eFP Battle Group. Command Sergeant Majors of the two respective countries also met to discuss the matters and challenges faced in military service and qualification improvement.  

Lithuanian and Czech defence cooperation is developed across different areas: Czech troops have been deployed with the NATO eFP since 2018, over 140 troops of different specializations at the moment, also, Czech Air Force fighter aircraft have been patrolling the Baltic skies as part of the NATO Air Policing Mission three times already. A allies, Lithuanian and Czech military personnel also train side by side in different exercise sand take part in other military events.
