On August 7-11 annual naval drills of the Baltic Naval Squadron (BALTRON) BALTRON Squadron Exercise 17/2 will take place in Lithuania's territorial waters and exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea.


The exercise will train Lithuanian, Latvian and German military units. LNS Jotvingis (N42) command and supply ship, LNS Sūduvis (M52) and LNS Kuršis (M54) mine countermeasures ships, LNS Aukštaitis (P14) and LNS Sėlis (P15) patrol ships, LNS Šakiai search and rescue ship, H21 harbour cutter, and Underwater Action Team will take part on behalf of the Lithuanian Navy. LVS Varonis (A90) and LVS Rusins (M08) mine countermeasures ship will represent the Latvian Navy, and FGS Pegnitz (M1090) mine countermeasures ship - the German Navy.


The drills will be held under the command of Commander Tomas Skurdenis, commander of Lithuania's Naval Flotilla.

Maneuver phase of the exercise on August 8-11 will train crew skills in the Baltic Sea: maneuver, communications procedures, gunnery training and defence against surface targets, search and rescue, and defence against asymmetrical threats. Mine countermeasures ships will also train mine hunting procedures.
