From July 16 the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will be guarded by Military Police of the Lithuanian Armed Forces who took over the function from the Lithuanian Special Forces.
MP will conduct the duty on a rotational basis of several months. They will take over the same responsibilities as were performed by the Special Operations Forces previously.
Currently the position of the Head of the Special Mission in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is held by Valteris Baliukonis based in Kabul.
Lithuanian troops serve in Afghanistan in the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team, international staffs of ISAF, and the National Support Element of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Special Forces Squadron „Aitvaras" is deployed in the southern Afghanistan.
