The annual United States Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF) exercise in Eastern Europe, Saber Strike 2022, begins in Lithuania this week.
The exercise trains the tactical ability of the U.S. forces to move capabilities into the eastern flank of NATO during the cold season and the interoperability with the Allies there. This year Saber Strike 2022 takes place as an element of the largest training event, Exercise Defender-Europe 2022. The 12th Combat Aviation Brigade of the U.S. and the Royal British Air Force servicemembers with CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters and AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, as well as a U.S. air defence platoon, will train in the part of Saber Strike 2022 hosted by Lithuania this year.
The U.S. and UK capabilities will be hosted at Lithuanian Armed Forces units and training ranges to hone their readiness for air support tasks. The Polish troops with F-16 fighter aircraft and the British air personnel with Typhoon assets who are currently in charge of the NATO Air Policing Mission will be training in the Baltic skies too. Columns of the U.S. 2nd Cavalry Regiment with equipment will be crossing over to Latvia by Lithuanian roads this week to take part in the exercise as well.
Coordination for the portion of Exercise Saber Strike 2022 in Lithuania is provided by the Command Cell of the Lithuanian Land Force, and Host Nation Support and interaction is ensures by units across the Land Force, Air Force, National Defence Volunteer Force, Logistics Command, Military Police, and other units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Exercise Saber Strike 2022 is closely linked with Exercise Strong Griffin 2022 of the Motorized Infantry Brigade Griffin that is running at the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area (Pabradė). Alongside the American allies, exercise tasks will be rehearsed by batteries of the Lithuanian Air Defence Battalion, troops of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Lithuania, the 3-66 Armour Battalion of the U.S. in Lithuania.
The highlight of Exercise Saber Strike 2022 in Lithuania is a combined operations to take place next week: troops of Kęstutis Motorised Infantry Battalion will be deployed from Pabradė to Kazlų Rūda Training Area by U.S., UK and Lithuanian aircraft and conduct combat actions according to the exercise scenario.
