Address of Chief of Defence of Lithuania on the Lithuanian Armed Forces Day

Today we mark the 93rd anniversary of the establishment of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The deeds and spirit of our ancestors inspire warriors of this day. The lyrics of the National Anthem are still calling for ladling strength from our ancient history.

Lithuanian army has been famous as battle-seasoned over ages. People used to sacrifice their lives for the freedom of their country without being demanded to in the hope that they were serving for their country, their people and their Motherland. War history of Lithuania proves that our freedom has not come for free and that we are worth it.

Today, in the face of hard times, Lithuanian military are asked to tighten their belts together with the rest of the nation, to use resources more reasonably, to refuse a part of acquisition plans and other projects. Meanwhile we have to enhance our defence capabilities, conduct efficient combat training to have well-trained military personnel, and ensure defence of our homeland, as well as fulfill international commitments. Today we are a part of the world's most powerful Alliance our soldiers and capabilities have been recognised by the Allies, NATO demonstrates clear appreciation of Lithuania's input into collective operations and forces on standby.

This year essential steps have been taken to make our country a safer place - training of the mobilization reserve has been resumed, new Military Service Concepts is being put into practice. I am convinced that this direction of development will make the Lithuanian Armed Forces an even more motivated and professional institution which will become a model of educating civil society and supporting the State.

With all of my heart I congratulate Lithuania's soldiers, volunteers, reserve and retired servicemembers, establishers of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, resistance fighters and riflemen, friends of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, on the Lithuanian Armed Forces Day. I am very proud about Lithuanian soldiers who complete their asks with great responsibility both here, in our homeland, and in far away lands together with our allies, who are model citizens of our nation and excellent military servicemembers. Dear soldiers, on the Armed Forces Day I wish you fortitude in fulfilling your duty to the Motherland.
