Air Assault Control Group of the Artillery Battalion rotate in Afghanistan


New rotation of troops of the Air Assault Control Group of Gen Romualdas Giedraits Artillery Battalion continue the half-year standby in composition of the Danish Contingent in Helmand province of Afghanistan. On February 11 the 1st Air Assault Control Group replaced the 2nd Air Assault Control Group thus for a second time taking up the mission in Helmand in the south of Afghanistan.

 

Troops of the Artillery Battalion have been conducting service in the mission in Afghanistan since 2008.

 

Air Assault Control Group coordinates ground attacks of aircrafts.

 

The 1st Air Assault Control Group was formed in the Artillery Battalion in 2007. Danish experts rendered significant support throughout the formation and training process. Members of the unit were first deployed to the mission in the south of Afghanistan in composition of the Danish Combat Unit in 2008.

 

The 2nd Air Assault Control Group formed in 2009 served in the mission theatre in composition of the Danish Combat Unit from the summer of 2010 to February of 2011.

 

Currently Gen Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion includes two Air Assault Control Groups, the main task of the units is providing air support to a battalion-sized combat unit of MIB "Iron Wolf". Training of a third group is planned to begin this year.
