February 6 through 9 Chair of the NATO Military Committee Admiral Rob Bauer is conducting a visit to Lithuania. Monday he met with Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Valdemaras Rupšys.
“We are celebrating the 5th anniversary of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group Lithuania these days – it is an immensely important collective defence commitment of NATO allies. NATO force presence on the ground in Lithuania is exceptionally important and meaningful. We hope for the NATO deterrence and defence to be fortified with regard to the present-day security environment, the Russian military build-up near Ukraine and in Belarus,” Minister A. Anušauskas told Admiral R. Bauer.
“We have discussed at the meeting the security situation in our region, the activity of NATO units sent to Lithuania and the steadfast commitment to contribute to NATO deterrence, and if necessary, to defensive actions in our region. Admiral’s attention to Lithuania clearly indicates his awareness of the threats our region is facing,” Lieutenant General Valdemaras Rupšys summed up the meeting.
At the meeting with Chief of Defence Admiral was briefed on the structure organisation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, analysis of the security situation, and strategic communication.
The visit agenda also covers a trip to the Suwalki Gap and the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence in Vilnius. While in Lithuania, the guest will deliver a lecture to IIRPS VU students and academic community and attend celebration of the 5th anniversary of the NATO eFP Battalion Lithuania Wednesday.
