Military cooperation between Lithuania and Sweden prior to Lithuania's membership in NATO was based mainly on Sweden's assistance to the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Projects of weaponry and equipment handover, medical assistance, sea and coastline surveillance system, air defence battalion, and other projects were carried out and Lithuanian officers were delegated to study at different military education institutions in Sweden.
Currently, the cooperation is developed between branches of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Swedish Armed Forces. The closest cooperation is developed by the Air Forces of the countries and their Navies as well as military medical services. Bilateral cooperation programmes are harmonized at staff level.
The Armed Forces of Sweden and of Lithuania train in joint military exercises in the Baltic Region. One of the most recent examples was the last BRTE event, conducted on April 1-2.
