Chief of Defence of Lithuania on visit in Afghanistan

Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius is visiting Lithuanian military personnel deployed on the International Security Assistance Force's (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan.

Chief of Defence is accompanied by chairman of the Committee on Health Affairs of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania Antanas Matulas, Minister of Agriculture Kazys Starkevičius, other representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Armed Forces, delegation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine which will be visiting troops of Ukraine deployed with the Lithuanian-led PRT.

In Afghanistan Lt Gen A. Pocius is also expected to meet with representatives of the administration of Ghor for a discussion over the transfer of responsibility for security onto Afghan forces, and other points.

Currently there are around 250 Lithuanian military deployed on the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, they serve with the Provincial Reconstruction and Police Operational Mentor and Liaison Teams in Ghor, Air Mentoring Team in Kandahar, and the Special Operations Squadron in southern Afghanistan. Lithuanian soldiers also conduct a mission in the Regional Command West (RC-W). Around 20 of them serve with the National Support Element and ensure logistic provision of Lithuanian missions in Afghanistan.
