Chief of Defence of Lithuania to attend the meeting of the NATO’s Military Committee

On January 18 and 19 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius will participate in the meeting of the Military Committee in Brussels (Belgium).

 

At the meeting Chiefs of Defence of NATO countries will discuss the aspects of implementing the new NATO's Strategic Concept, the progress of NATO transformation and the ongoing military operations in the Balkans and Afghanistan.

 

Lithuania's CHOD will also join the meeting of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council where the current Nordic-Baltic defence cooperation issues and perspectives will be represented, and the sitting of the NATO-Russia Council.

 

The visit in Brussels is also planned to include bilateral meetings with CHODs of NATO allies and partner countries.

 

Lt Gen A.Pocius is expected to return on January 20.

 

The NATO Military Committee is the supreme structure of military command in NATO subordinate only to the North Atlantic Council, the Defence Planning Committee and the Nuclear Planning Group.

 

The Military Committee is responsible for making military strategic decisions and shaping military-related advice to the North Atlantic Council in charge of making political decisions. The day-to-day work of the NATO Military Committee is done during sittings of Military Representatives delegated by the member states.

 

Normally the Military Committee holds CHOD-level meetings three times per year. Two are held in Brussels while the third one takes place on a rotational basis in one of the member states.
