Chief of the Defence Staff discussed strengthening bilateral military cooperation in Moldova

Chief of the Defence Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Rear Admiral Giedrius Premeneckas met with Chief of Defence of Moldova Brigadier General Vitalie Micov during his formal visit to the country.

Generals discussed the partnership between the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova, as well as its future prospects. They focussed particularly on the modernization of the Moldovan Armed Forces in line with the western standards, soldier and officer training, strengthening cybersecurity, military capability development, and the practical bilateral cooperation. Among other topics discussed was Lithuania’s support to military and civilian education and training efforts, arrangement of expert network building events, expertise exchange and completion of other cooperation projects.

“We appreciate the long-standing partnership with Moldova and we are ready to continue supporting you on your path of modernizing the Armed Forces. Moldova is an important Lithuania’s partner in strengthening security and stability in Eastern Europe. Shared perception of threats, consistent military cooperation and experience-sharing helps us to strengthen the resilience of our countries and the ability to respond to modern security challenges effectively,” said Rear Admiral Giedrius Premeneckas.

An important part of the visit was dedicated for familiarization with the brigade-sized military infrastructure developed in line with Western standards and Moldovan Armed Forces modernization projects. Other topics touched upon during the visit concerned the Lithuanian capability building assistance initiatives for strengthening the Armed Forces of Moldova and the prospects for expanding practical bilateral cooperation in the future.

Lithuania and Moldova have been maintaining close cooperation on defence since 2000. Over this time, the Lithuanian Armed Forces have been consistently supporting Moldova’s military personnel training process by inviting Moldovan troops to attend various courses and training events conducted by the Lithuanian military. The cooperation also encompasses expert visits, experience exchange, military education projects and other military ability-strengthening formats that advance Moldova’s military modernization and its interoperability with NATO Allies.
