On May 9-10 Chief of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and acting Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Vitalijus Vaikšnoras will take part in the annual Nordic Chiefs of Defence meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.
Chiefs of Defence or officials of equivalent responsibilities of Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Germany, Poland, Iceland and Sweden, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe U.S. General Curtis M. Scaparrotti (SACEUR) and officers with the U.S. European Command (EUCOM) will exchange experience and discuss topical matters of defence cooperation.
The Nordic and Baltic CHODs are expected to address regional security issues and the steps their countries have taken in response to the changes of security environment in the Baltic region. Other topics to be discussed are evolution of defence policy and the influence it has on defence planning.
The Nordic-Baltic Chiefs of Defence format takes place once per year in one of the participating countries. The meeting is organised by EUCOM and Chief of Defence of the hosting country, which is Sweden this year. Lithuania last hosted such a meeting in January 2013.
Commander of US European Command (EUCOM) and Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) U.S. General Curtis M. Scaparrotti paid his first visit to Lithuania in March.
