On April 25 Chiefs of Defence Staffs of the three Baltic states had a meeting in Tartu, Estonia. Representatives of Estonia presented projects of trilateral defence cooperation at the event. Chief of the Defence Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Lt Col Remigijus Baltrėnas was in attendance on Lithuania’s behalf.
The Estonian side conducted a briefing on cooperation opportunities in developing joint Baltic headquarters elements and in perfecting the situational awareness. Topics on military cross-border mobility and the Baltic Defence College were also discussed.
“The projects we discuss with the Estonian and Latvian colleagues are mostly continuous in nature. We are running them to improve interoperability and find the best solutions in terms of our common defence at national and NATO level,” Lt Gen R. Baltrėnas underlined.
The Lithuanian Chief of the Defence Staff with counterparts Maj Gen Georgs Kerlings of Latvia and Maj Gen Vahur Karus of Estonia signed a joint communique summarizing the military advice guidance.
Such Chiefs of Defence Staffs’ meetings address implementation of the political and military decisions taken at top level by the Baltic states and ensures a proper coordination of that at headquarters level. The trilateral Baltic cooperation enables effective coordination and exhaustion of available resources for strengthening NATO capabilities and ensuring security of the Baltic region.
