Commanders of Land Forces of the Baltic States meet in Latvia

On April 14-15 Commander Land Force of the Lithuanian armed Forces Brig. Gen. Jonas Vytautas Žukas will take part in the annual conference of the Baltic States' Land Forces held in Latvia, Adaži Military Area.

Agenda of the conference encompasses sharing up-to-date information related to activity of the Baltic States' land forces and experience of soldiers gained while performing duty in the NATO Response Force (NRF) in composition of the trilateral Baltic Battalion BALTBAT. Leading officials of the Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian Land Forces also plan to touch upon perspectives of trilateral and multilateral cooperation in the future: including collaboration of the Baltic Battalion with the Danish Division, Danish Advisory and Training Team (DATS), and units of the US military forces in Europe.

In the Adaži Military Area attendees of the conference will watch field tactical exercise of the Estonian Battalion and tour Adaži Military Base.

The trilateral Baltic Battalion established in 2007 comprises Lithuanian and Estonian military detachments and Latvian staff officers and is led by Lithuania. Two mechanised infantry and staff companies, mortar, anti-tank and signal platoons, and logistic support military unit represent Lithuania in the Baltic Battalion. The majority of soldiers commissioned to BALTBAT serve in the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion.

As of January 1 troops of the Baltic Battalion were assigned to conduct a half-year standby in the Land Component of NATO Response Force (NRF-14) led by Denmark. The component comprises two US infantry brigades (BALTBAT is attached to one of them) and Greek infantry brigade. Other nations contributing military personnel to the Land Component of NRF-14 are the Netherlands, Spain, UK, the Czech Republic, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Italy.

Lithuanian Land Force is the most numerous branch of the Lithuanian Armed Forces comprising the Motorised Infantry Brigade „Iron Wolf", Juozas Vitkus Engineering Battalion, and National Defence Volunteer Force.
