On August 19-22 troops and equipment of the 21st enhanced Vigilance Activity Brigade (eVA) of Germany moved by roads to the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė from the border with Poland. The German brigade will move over 650 pieces of military equipment by land and sea to Lithuania to train at Exercise Grand Eagle-2/24 until September 8.
The goal of the exercise is to train redeployment of 21st Brigade units to Lithuania to ensure defence of the eastern flank in the quickest manner possible. The exercise allows to assess the pace at which the German Armed Forces is able to move troops to Lithuania in support of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in defending the territorial integrity of the Republic of Lithuania, as well as maintains high combat readiness units of the units.
The enhanced Vigilance Activity Brigade (eVA) assigned to Lithuania has been on standby since 2022, since December 2023 the duty is in the responsibility of the 21st Brigade of the Bundeswehr led by Brig Gen M. Eggert. The roughly 4000-strong Brigade is one of the rapid reaction units of the German Armed Forces.
