Harbour protection exercise wrapped in Klaipėda

On May 14 DV and Media Day of Exercise Harbour Defence 2019 and international naval Operation Open Spirit 2019 held at the Cruise and Warship Terminal in Klaipėda concluded the port security exercise co-organised by the Lithuanian Navy and the NATO Centre of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters.


"We have used joint capabilities to ensure protection of Klaipėda Seaport and it has been a great experience for our soldiers. They are not just ready but also highly motivated," Cdr Tadas Jablonskis (Lithuanian Navy), Staff Officer for Operational Requirements at the NATO Centre of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters, said.

 

Media representatives were able to observe soldiers of the Lithuanian Navy, Lithuanian Air Force helicopter, and Lithuanian Navy port area patrol cutters take part in an integrated port protection exercise while gathered at the port security post. The training audience showcased their skills to respond to and counter attacks and provocations against the infrastructure of Klaipėda Seaport on land, at sea, and below the surface.


International historical explosive ordnance disposal operation Open Spirit 2019 began in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zones of Lithuania and Latvia on May 3 when warships of the NATO allies sailed into Klaipėda. Twelve guest and 2 Lithuanian Navy ships (Skalvis (M53) and Kuršis (M54) are still at sea taking part in mine hunting and sweeping efforts Open Spirit which will conclude on May 16.
