Exercise Red Lion for reconnaissance units began this week in the Gaižiūnų Training Area. The training event involves over 300 Lithuanian and Danish soldiers; 140 Denmark's military who are deployed in Lithuania from the Reconnaissance Company of the 1st Brigade, Danish Division, are using their MOWAG Eagle IV armoured reconnaissance vehicles.
The Danish troops and reconnaissance units of the Lithuanian Land Force side by side are practicing motorised reconnaissance which is applied in different types of operations - offensive, defensive, peace support, etc.
Danish soldiers have brought roughly 70 units of various military vehicles, the bulk of which is made up of the MOWAG Eagle IV armoured reconnaissance vehicles. Currently the equipment is stationed in the Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf.
As measures of deterrence agreed on in NATO have been enhanced in the Baltic region since this spring, a rotating U.S. ground forces company is deployed in Lithuania, plus a Hungarian company has been deployed to train in Lithuania from late October till the end of December.
The Alliance has reinforced defence of airspace and territorial sea of the Baltic States in response to the changed geopolitical situation in the region.
