On January 26, Lithuanian troops of the Lithuanian-led PRT-10 handed over to representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Society in Ghowr a shipment of humanitarian aid - around a ton of wheat flour and cooking oil.
Members of the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Society will deliver and distribute to impoverished families of the province.
Typical winter in mountainous Ghowr has really low temperatures with lots of snow making roads inaccessible and isolating inhabitants of remote locations from the main provincial centres. The worst needs of poor families are food and warm clothes. Emergency Management Committee of Ghowr comprising representatives from local administration and provincial NGOs with whom members of the Lithuanian-led PRT and the Special Mission convene responded to the problem by delegating to the Red Cross deliver and distribute humanitarian assistance from Lithuania to impoverished citizens in the province.
Often peacekeepers themselves take humanitarian assistance to locations difficult to access. In the beginning of January local communities received 3 tones of wheat flour, cooking oil, warm clothes and footwear as assistance.
Lithuanian-led PRT headquartered in Chaghcharan, the capital city of Ghowr, took up responsibility for security in the province in June 2005. PRT is a joint military-civilian mission operating under International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Its main task is to help Afghan Central Government extend its authority in the province, and to ensure security and environment suitable for provincial reconstruction.
Together with around 150 of Lithuanian military and civilian personnel representatives of Denmark, Georgia, Japan, the USA, Croatia, Romania, and Ukraine provide security in Ghowr. PRT-10 is formed on the basis of the 1st Territorial Unit of the NDVF Dainava Military District.
