On November 18-29 the Lithuanian Navy trained in multinational exercise Freezing Winds 2024 in the archipelago in the territorial sea and exclusive economic zone of Finland.
The Lithuanian Navy was presented by two mine countermeasures ships, Skalvis (M53) and Kuršis (M54, as well as Shallow Waters and Combat Diver Team members of the Harbor Protection and Coastal Defense Service. The Lithuanian military were training area, island and site reconnaissance and raiding tasks in a team with the Reconnaissance Company of the Finish Coastal Battalion and the U.S. Marines. The highlight of the exercise challenges was the mountainous and rocky terrain and particularly severe climate.
The exercise is building Finland’s and NATO Allies’ readiness to implement joint maritime operations in defence of the Baltic Sea region in adverse weather conditions. Freezing Winds is a multinational exercise featuring surface combat, amphibious operations, littoral and harbor defence tactical exercise. The exercise this year involved nearly 4500 troops and seamen with 30 ships from the United States, France and nearly all the Baltic Sea states: Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
