The most senior command of the Bundeswehr is visiting Lithuania

December 5, Lithuania hosts a visit by the top leadership of the German Armed Forces: Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and service commanders. The visit takes place as Germany is speedily implements its most significant defence reform since the end of the Cold War and tangibly strengthens collective defence capabilities in the eastern flank of NATO.

Chiefs of Defence of Lithuania and Germany have met to discuss the progress of stationing the German Brigade, collaboration of Lithuanian and German military units, major training events of both Allies in 2026, Germany’s assistance is arranging personnel training for the currently fortified Iron Wolf Brigade, Lithuania’s plans of tank crew training, and more topics. 

“This visit is an obvious testament to the long-term character, strength and systematism of the German decisions when it comes to Lithuania. The Germans are sending a message to the society of Lithuania: Allied defence rests on real capabilities and consistent deployment on the ground in Lithuania, not symbols. Today, Germany leads in Europe. Its Brigade, infrastructure and industry-related decisions underline a strong resolve to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO. This visit is a message to all: Germany and Lithuania are ready to act hand in hand whenever necessary, also, Germany is an Ally to trust,” stated Chief of Defence of Lithuania General Raimundas Vaikšnoras.

As Lithuania gears up to fully host the stationed German Brigade, practical integration between German and Lithuanian militaries is accelerating, German companies are joining the defence ecosystem of Lithuania, infrastructure is upgraded and architecture of enduring presence is built. At the same time, structural decisions are taken to strengthen military personnel. Reserve, weaponry and readiness of the Bundeswehr. The bulk of the Brigade is planned to be transferred over the year 2026 and it is planned to be stationed completely in its entirety – and reach Full Operational Capability – by the end of 2027. As of then, the Brigade will be a combat unit fully ready for action, all its equipment, gear, personnel and stockpiles in place.
